From the Governor

Mountain West Regional Conference:

I hope that all of you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The District has been doing well for the first 8 months of the Sertoma year. As you can see by the membership report as of 1 February the district has had a net gain of 11 members. Our clubs are doing great on their retention and getting new members. Here are some interesting things that the Pikes Peak District has accomplished: We have had the largest net gain in membership than any other District in Sertoma. Only 5 other districts had a net gain and that was a total of 14. Another interesting thing on membership was that Colorado has more members (899) than the rest of the Mountain West region states (672). Mountain West Region has a total of 1571.

A new Serteen Club

“The Classical Academy Serteen Club” located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, sponsored by the Austin Bluff Sertoma Club, held their Charter Banquet on the 12th of January 2012 at the school’s North Campus Cafeteria.

Governor, Eddie L Kinney, installed the club officers:

President: Lynnae Supplee

Vice President: Kayla Frieden

Secretary: Zack Clemmons

Treasurer: Jamison Pfeifer

Austin Bluffs President Rose Timora welcomed the Serteens to the Sertoma family and presented the TCA Club Charter to Ms. Supplee, Club President and a senior at TCA, who then responded by accepting the charter on behalf of the Serteen Club. The TCA Serteen Club was chartered with 35 members and has performed over 200 service hours during the 2011-12 fall semester.

On Friday, January 13th, representatives of the Legacy Sertoma and Rocky Mountain Sertoma Clubs formally presented a Frontrow To Go sound amplification system to the Foothills Elementary School P.E. Department in front of the entire student body assembled along with parents and other guests. Representing the two clubs, Pikes Peak District Governor Kinney made the presentation remarks. The P.E. teacher, Barb Francklyn, actually tears up when describing the vast difference it has made for a surprisingly large number of her students. This is her thank you note: “Thank you very much for the Front Row To Go speaker system. It was the best Christmas present ever. I have tears in my eyes when I think about my deaf student being able to hear me better. All of the 438 students at Foothills hear me better.

Physical Education class is so important in this age of computer games and even games on our phones. It helps students with their academics too.

I look forward to having a healthier throat since I can now speak quietly. I will need to train myself to speak softer, I have been teaching P.E. for 15 years.

What a wonderful and useful gift you have given to our Foothills community. We will use the portable system in many ways during the school year.

Thank you again for your generosity. You have touched many lives for years to come.”

Freedom Week 22 February

The luncheon hosted by Colorado Springs Club for Sertoma President (John Kerr) and International Regional Director (Bill Hupp) had a turnout of around 30 members and guests. The president spoke on a few topics. He stated that he would like to see all clubs be represented at the upcoming 100th anniversary of Sertoma in Kansas City. It is to be held on April 25-28 2011.

The Freedom Banquet hosted by Austin Bluffs was a huge success. We were honored by the Sertoma President (John Kerr) and International Regional Director (Bill Hupp). We had an excellent turnout of members and guest around 120 attended the dinner.

The Russell Middle School of the Performing Art and Science gave a musical presentation of: “ANTARES Women’s Ensemble.”

Past International Director (Jo Carroll) read Colorado Springs City Council Proclamation declaring “Sertoma Freedom Week February 20-26, 2012”.
